Taylor Scores Pair of Top 10s Against Stout Midget Field

Inside Line Promotions – GARDEN CITY, Kan. (May 30, 2018) – Zac Taylor admits he’s still learning how to be aggressive in a midget, but his lessons paid off last weekend.

Taylor posted a pair of top-10 finishes against a very stout field last Saturday and Sunday at Airport Raceway, where he competed in the 3rd annual Midget Round Up with the Lucas Oil POWRi RMMRA Series and Lucas Oil POWRi West Midget League.

“It was an up and down weekend,” he said. “Early we struggled with some engine issues, but once that took care of itself we had a very fast race car. To come out of this weekend with a pair of top-10 finishes and pass a lot of quality cars has me very excited about the rest of the season.”

The action began on Saturday when Taylor, who was driving the Todd Henry Racing midget, posted a fourth-place run in his heat race and transferred into the A Main with a runner-up finish in a B Main.

“We started 17th in the A Main and I fell to last,” he said. “At one point the leader was trying to lap me, but I was a tick faster than him. We were still having issues with the engine spitting and sputtering. The last 10 or 15 laps the problem went away and I went up to the cushion and started passing a lot of cars. After we took the white flag I could see a couple of cars ahead of me and in the last corner I got around them and ended up sixth.”

Taylor’s charge from 17th to sixth was tied for the second-most cars passed.

The event concluded on Sunday when Taylor placed third in his heat and won a B Main by more than half a track. He started 15th in the A Main and finished 10th.

“I had two cars ahead of me that were all over the track and I followed them too long,” he said. “Once I got an opening and got around them I just ran out of time.”

Taylor ranks third in the Lucas Oil POWRi RMMRA championship standings, but is only three points behind leader Carson Garrett. The next series event isn’t until June 15 so Taylor will debut his family sprint car and new 360ci engine this Saturday at Gillette Thunder Speedway in Gillette, Wyo., with the ASCS Frontier Region.

“I’m excited to see how we stack up,” he said. “I’m really pumped for the entire season. I get to race a lot more and gain a lot of experience.”
