Inside Line Promotions – MECHANICSBURG, Pa. (July 23, 2018) – Jason Sides is bound for New York for a week of competition with the World of Outlaws Craftsman Sprint Car Series.
Sides and ‘The Greatest Show on Dirt’ will compete on Wednesday at Airborne Park Speedway in Plattsburgh; on Friday at Ransomville Speedway in Ransomville for the Big ‘R’ Outlaw Shootout; and on Sunday at Weedsport Speedway in Weedsport for the Empire State Challenge.
“We’ve never been to Airborne Park Speedway and we don’t have many laps at Ransomville or Weedsport,” he said. “It’s good because you don’t have any bad habits, but at the same time you don’t have as many notes to go off. In hot laps you try to take it all in and make a calculated guess of what you need to do for the rest of the night.”
Sides competed last week in Pennsylvania with the action beginning on Tuesday at Lernerville Speedway in Sarver during the Don Martin Memorial Silver Cup. He qualified 24th quickest, but powered from sixth to fourth place in a heat race to lock into the A Main.
“We hot lapped good,” he said. “When we got ready to qualify the frontstretch of the track was wet and the backstretch was dry. You had to fine tune it to get through the wet, but also the dry slick. I didn’t get through turns one and two as well as I needed. I thought I was up there, but I wasn’t far enough up there.
“We made progress in the heat and in the feature we were going pretty good, but halfway through we got really loose. The last 10 laps we got going again. Once the leader went by we were just as good as second and third place once the track cleaned off on the bottom.”
Sides ended with a 16th-place result.
He resumed competition on Thursday at Lincoln Speedway in Abbottstown during the Gettysburg Clash.
“Lincoln is a track we’ve always struggled at,” he said. “The beginning of the night went well. We drew an early number and got a good qualifying lap. I didn’t move around enough in the heat and got passed by (Danny) Dietrich for the win, but we made it into the dash.”
Sides qualified fourth quickest overall, placed second in a heat race and scored a third-place outing in the dash to start the A Main on the inside of the second row.
“It was probably my fault in the feature with the way our car handled,” he said. “The car was so good early I didn’t want to change a lot. We put new tires on and didn’t make many adjustments. It got loose in the feature. In turns one and two I could hold my own, but in turn four it would hang real bad. It was my fault for not making better adjustments.”
Sides held on for a 15th-place result.
The weekend wrapped up on Friday at Williams Grove Speedway, which hosted the Summer Nationals and the Morgan Cup.
“We were pretty decent hot lapping, but I think we just dropped the ball and forgot to put fuel in it for qualifying,” he said. “Typically we put 10 gallons in at the start of the night and that’s fine. We ended up pacing around in hot laps a few laps before we got on the gas. We got sidetracked and didn’t remember to check the fuel before qualifying. In turns one and two we took off, but in turns three and four it spit and sputtered. Qualifying messed us up for the night. I’ll take the blame for it.”
Sides timed in 23rd quickest. He ended ninth in a heat race before a fourth-place finish in the Last Chance Showdown earned a transfer into the back of the main event. Sides capped the night by maneuvering from 22nd to a 19th in the A Main.
Saturday’s show at Williams Grove Speedway rained out.
