Inside Line Promotions – MECHANICSBURG, Pa. (March 14, 2018) – Caleb Helms produced his first career podium finish at the famed Williams Grove Speedway last Sunday to cap a productive weekend in Central Pennsylvania.
“I dream about winning at Williams Grove,” he said. “It’s one of the tracks I want to win at the most. It was sweet to be up there with the guys who race there regularly.”
The night opened with Helms advancing from seventh to fifth place in a heat race to earn a spot in the feature redraw.
“The track was narrow and fast in the heats,” he said. “On a restart I took advantage and was able to make a pass for fifth to make the redraw. We drew the No. 2 and started on the outside of the front row for the A Main. We couldn’t get off the corners on the starts and restarts very good. I felt like we were just hanging on the whole time, but after looking at the video we were able to maintain and didn’t lose ground after a lap or two.”
Helms held onto the runner-up position for the entire race leading up to the last lap when veteran Greg Hodnett made a pass.
“On the last lap Greg was able to get underneath me, but we were pretty happy to hang onto third,” he said. “It was awesome.”
The weekend began the previous day at Lincoln Speedway in Abbottstown, Pa., where Helms won a heat race after starting on the outside of the front row.
“We got the lead on the start and won the heat to make the redraw,” he said. “They did a redraw for the top couple of drivers in each heat and I drew the No. 8. We didn’t make any adjustments to the car because the track had been wet and what we’re battling is the right rear of the car isn’t driving the car around. It gives it the impression of being tight, but it’s still loose. The track dried up significantly by the time we got to the feature. We misjudged the track and we weren’t set up well for it. We held on and were running around 12th, but a car hit the wall and I had to spin to miss him.”
Helms ended with a 19th-place finish.
“It’s pretty critical for us to run these races before the All Star season begins next month, especially when we’re trying to find our speed,” he said. “It helps me get more laps around the tracks and also helps us get better dialed in and get the balance figured out.”
