WHITE CITY, Ore. – Joey Tanner won his fourth CD Architects Late Model feature of the year September 11 at Southern Oregon Speedway, but it wasn’t enough to prevent Bob Dees from winning the track championship.
During Massey Construction Night at the Races championship night #1, other season titles were won by Jake Wheeler in Limited Sprints, Charlie Eaton in Super 4s, and David Steele in Mini Stocks.
In CD Architects Late Models, Portland’s Tanner set fast time around the 3/8-mile dirt oval with a qualifying lap of 14.839 seconds. Heat races were won by Tanner and Rob Mayea. Tanner also won the dash, while John Duffie started the 40-lap feature on the pole.
Tanner started sixth but took home the $4,000 in the Camren James Memorial Race as he came out on top over Mayea, Rich McCoy, Dees and Skipper Klimcheck. The sixth top-10 of the year was enough for Dees to win the title by three points.
In Limited Sprints, Central Point’s Wheeler set fast time with a lap of 12.874 seconds. Wheeler also won the dash, while Enrique Jaime started the 25-lap feature from the pole. At the end it was Jaime, Wheeler, Johnny Burke, RJ McGahney and Charlie Thompson. Wheeler comfortably won the title over Jaime on the strength of finishing in the top five in all six races, including three wins.
In the Rapp Racing Super 4s, David Marble set fast time with a lap of 16.671 seconds. Chris Salyer won the heat race, while Jesse Merriman started the 15-lap feature on pole. Central Point’s Dustin Knight came from seventh to win the feature over Marble, Eaton, Salyer and Jim Cunningham. Eaton won the track title over Knight on the strength of one win and four top-five finishes.
In Mini Stocks, Talent’s Steele set fast time with a lap of 17.686 seconds. Steele also won the heat race and dash, then came from last to win the 20-lap feature over Ashtin Hedges, Scott Yerges, Kristopher Mix and Quintyn Ericks. Steele’s third win of the year was enough to give him the championship by 10 points over Hedges.
The second championship night for the 2021 season at SOS takes place this Saturday, September 18 with the Sweet Tea IMCA Modifieds, Dusty’s Transmission IMCA Sport Modifieds, Outlaw Pro Stocks and Hornets. For more information, visit southernoregonmotorsports.com or visit the track’s Facebook page.
