Scotty Thiel – Top 5 Run during IRA opener after long haul back from South Dakota Sprint Car Nationals
This past weekend the #64 team put their travelling skills to the test after trucking out to Jefferson, South Dakota for the South Dakota Sprint Car Nationals at Park Jefferson Speedway on Friday and Saturday. Following that event, the team made the 7.5 hour haul back to Beaver Dam Raceway in Beaver Dam, WI on Sunday to compete at the 2018 IRA Season Opener. After making the $10,000 to win Show in South Dakota but pulled off in the feature, Scotty charged his way to a solid top 5 performance at Beaver Dam.
37 cars were signed into the $10,000 to win South Dakota Sprint Car Nationals at Park Jefferson Speedway. This was a 360 event which the STM was fortunate to borrow an engine from Broty Racing Engines for this event. A passing point format was utilized on Friday night for the heat race events which then would determine the lineup for Saturday’s big $10,000 to win event. Scotty drew a 65 pill which placed him to start sixth in the first round of heat race action. When he took the green flag he charged forward and never stopped as he went on to claim the heat race victory. The second round of heat races would be lined up by inverting the first round finish. That would place Scotty to start last in the heat race which was in the 7th position. The track took rubber early in the night so that made passing very difficult during round two. Thiel took the green and had a good run up through the field before he checked up due to a car spinning and was collected in the mayhem. The field lined back up and Scotty was only able to pass one car in that heat race and ended up with a sixth place finish. After all the heat races were finished, Scotty would end up being 12th in overall passing points which locked him into the Saturday night A-main event. The crew prepared hard to give Scotty a car to win on Saturday night but track conditions made that very difficult from the 12th starting position. The 24 car field took the green flag for the 30 lap, $10,000 to win, A-main event. After only two laps of green flag action, the track began to take rubber which made for hardly any passing. Thiel made his way up to the 10th position before pulling into the infield with only a few laps to go. The tires were completely burned off and there was no more incentive to running as the payout stayed the same for the back half of the field. Scotty was officially scored in the 18th position. “These last two nights were just really hard on equipment. We burned through eight tires over the course of two heat races and a feature. Starting 12th I knew it would be hard to move forward especially with the rubber coming in so soon. I need to thank GRP Motorsports for helping us out this weekend along with Broty Racing Engines for allowing us to run this motor.”
The team pulled down the 410 car, dismounted some tires, loaded up and heading east bound to Beaver Dam Raceway. They trucked 7.5 hours over night and pulled into Beaver Dam, WI at 8:00AM. They got a hotel and took a little nap before getting up and preparing for the IRA season opener at Beaver Dam Raceway. Scotty drew a six pill which placed him to go out fourth in qualifying. He was able to put down the quickest time of the night which was a confidence booster for the team. He went on to start the heat race event in the fourth position since they invert the top four cars based on qualifying times. Thiel would go on to take the heat race win by over six seconds on the field. That would allow him to be in the redraw for the nights 30 lap A-main event. During the redraw segment, Scotty drew the #10 starting position. That was clearly not what he wanted to see and would have his work cut out for him starting tenth in the 30 lap main event. The field took the green flag and Scotty began to work the top side of the track. He moved up into the eighth spot early on and held that position for a majority of the race. After the last restart with only ten laps to go, Thiel worked the high side again and charged his way up to the fifth position when the checkered flag flew. “It was a pretty solid night for our team after having a disappointing trip to South Dakota. We went quick time and won the heat but got set back a little with that redraw. Tonight was better for the guys starting up front. We managed a top five so that was decent for us. I cannot thank all of our sponsors enough and these crew guys for busting their tails all weekend long.”
Next on tap the Scott Thiel Motorsports team is this coming Saturday night at the Wilmot Raceway in Wilmot, WI with the IRA Series.

Torsion Bar Rate:
Torsion bar testing has been around as long as the bar has. There are many different ways to test bars, but they all have the same goal.... to compare one bar to another and give the results in a numerical value (PSI, FORCE POUNDS, RATE). This is good, but can be hard to understand. We simplify this process. The numbering system we use is standard to the torsion bar industries. During our test sessions, data is collected and stored in our software, which then calculates it to a torsion bar size that everyone can understand. We have found 1025 bars that test between a 1012 and a 1036 bar. Our test services take away the guesswork. We provide you with a TORSION BAR RATE. Check out www.torsionbarrate.com for more info!
