Inside Line Promotions – ATTICA, Ohio (June 6, 2017) – Coming from the asphalt world of racing to dirt isn’t easy. Just ask Kevin Mingus, who is in his first full season of driving a 305ci sprint car on dirt.

Mingus got an education in slick track racing last Friday at Attica Raceway Park.

“I ran on some slick tracks last year, but nothing like this,” he said. “I learned Attica can take rubber and get really, really slick. I’ve never raced on anything like that so I was kind of driving blind out there.”

Mingus’ night started with a fourth-place heat race run, putting him in the redraw for the feature. He started seventh, but backed up to a 16th-place finish on the tricky track.

“We had a caution and I looked to see where I was and decided to duck into the work area to try an adjustment,” he said. “I had thought about running the top, but I didn’t see much up there. After the race I talked to Kyle Capodice, who I raced go-karts with, and veteran Bobby Clark and they gave me some great tips on how to run a slick track. Now it’s just a matter of applying that and fine-tuning it to my driving style.

“Right now what I really need is more experience and to continue learning. I have to break my old asphalt habits of running the same line. I need to move around and get the confidence to run the cushion if I want to and change when the track changes.”

Mingus had originally planned to travel to Mercer Raceway Park in Mercer, Pa., last Saturday, but opted to stay home and work on the car for a busy weekend that includes back-to-back JLH General Contractor FAST 305 Championship Series presented by Engine Pro events. It kicks off this Friday for mid-season championship night at Attica Raceway Park, which includes double points. On Saturday, he plans to take the Huber-Mingus Motorsports machine to Fremont Speedway in Fremont, Ohio.

Mingus currently sits 11th in the championship standings at Attica Raceway Park, 14th in the championship standings at Fremont Speedway and 10th in the FAST standings.

“We might have one of our sponsors with us this weekend so I’m excited yet nervous about that,” he said. “This is a huge weekend for us.”
