Trenchard, Peery, King, Flowers, And Knight Victorious At May 14th Southern Oregon Speedway Opener
White City, Oregon- Engines finally fired up for competition at Southern Oregon Speedway on Saturday, May 14th, for the 2022 Season Opener. Five classes attended the Jackson County Sports Park 3/8-mile, including two Speedway Motors IMCA Weekly Racing Program divisions. They were the Friesen Performance IMCA Modifieds, Friesen Performance IMCA Northern SportMods, Dwarf Cars, Pro Stocks, and Super 4’s.

Albert Gill, from Central Point, started the Friesen Performance IMCA Modified main event as the pacesetter. He remained in the position until being overtaken on lap five. Klamath Falls’ Nick Trenchard was the one to perform the pass.

In the Biehn Racing-fielded entry, Trenchard stayed in front of everyone else to win his second race of the season in Shaw Race Cars Western Region action. However, it is his first KMJ Performance Oregon State triumph of 2022, as his only other win was on April 29th at Siskiyou Golden Speedway in Yreka, California.

Albert Gill ended the evening second with third going to Central Point chauffeur Jesse Bailey. From Keno and in the Don Roemer owned car, Jeffrey Hudson hit the line fourth over fifth finishing Mark Wauge of Medford.

Yreka, California’s Ethan Killingsworth took off in the early goings of the Friesen Performance IMCA Northern SportMod feature. Unfortunately, the field would be bunched up after a lap nine caution, and Ryan Peery came to call on the restart. Peery, also from Yreka, managed to put himself at the point on lap ten.

Ryan would have his hands full in the closing stages of the race. Matt Sanders of Brookings got close to dethroning Peery from being the trailblazer. But Ryan Peery held on for the victory by 0.161 seconds. It was the tenth trip to victory lane of the year and the third time in KMJ Performance Oregon State competition. His most recent win was also on April 29th at Siskiyou Golden Speedway.

Matt Sanders was a respectable runner-up, while Salem teenager Trevor Point got third. Steven Sanders, another Brookings driver, and Grenada, California’s Garrett Hamilton were fourth and fifth in the finishing order. Daniel Ray, of Springfield, was the B Main winner earlier in the program.

Fred Hay showed the way when the green flag dropped in the Dwarf Car main event. The Eagle Point veteran held the position until Albany’s Tanner Curr got around him on lap three. Then, Brock Peters, also of Eagle Point, hunted down and passed Curr on lap eight.

Unfortunately, Brock would get caught up in a caution on lap ten, giving the lead to Josh King. King, from Medford, would feel significant pressure from Chris Kress.
The Roseburg racer of Kress successfully got by Josh King on lap twenty-two. But, unfortunately, a late-race caution would gather the field up one last time.

Josh King successfully reclaimed P1 from Chris Kress to pick up the victory on the restart. Chris Kress and Crescent City, California’s Colby Bergquist were second and third. Tanner Curr posted a fourth-place result while Devin LaHorgue, from Grants Pass, was fifth. Josh King won the consolation feature earlier in the evening.

It was quite the wild and crazy Pro Stock feature. Dennis Burtenhouse Jr., of Klamath Falls, was the trail boss in the first portion of the race. However, he would be challenged by fellow Klamath Falls racers Jeff Haudenshild with Haudenshild making it around him on lap six.

Jeff would hold down the point briefly as Scott Flowers successfully obtained first place after the seventh circuit. Flowers, also from K-Falls, maintained the lead the rest of the way despite some serious challenges from Jeff Haudenshild.

Jeff Haudenshild was a close second, while Matt Harlow, from Medford, ended things in third. James Flowers and Dennis Burtenhouse Jr. were fourth and fifth in the finishing order.

Lastly, in the Super 4’s, Ross Payant was the initial leader in their main event. However, Payant would be challenged by Central Point’s Dustin Knight. Knight got to the point on lap two as he beat Ross out at the start/finish line. Dustin Knight conquered the rest of the lap count to pick up the victory.

Ross Payant and Shady Cove’s Anthony Bartell were second and third. John Barger of Medford ended things in fourth over fifth finishing Charlie Eaton.

Racing returns to Southern Oregon Speedway on Saturday, May 21st, for Kids Bike Night. Classes in action will be Sprint Cars, Super Late Models, Dwarf Cars, and Mini Stocks. For more information, log on to www.southernoregonmotorsports.com.
